Final Assignment:
MS outcome #1: Demonstrate professional proficiency and exhibit familiarity with professional orientation and ethical practices as advocated by the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics.

(1) Ethical Autobiography (5 pages).
Write about what in your backgrounds helps you think through and identify what is right and wrong, as well as what constitutes ethical professional behavior. Specify your current level of ethical commitment and ethical sensitivity, giving examples that demonstrate your knowledge, understanding of and application of the ACA’s Code of ethical conduct.

(2) Ethical Decision-Making Style. This section of your paper articulates your implicit and explicit style. (10-15 pages)
Use one of the ethical decision-making models/theories (Corey, Sternberg, etc), and explain how you use that theory or model to guide your ethical decision-making when responding to the four scenarios included below. To what extent does the theory fit with how you made the ethical decisions for each case? Are their areas of the theory that do not align with your personal ethical decision-making?

§ You are a counselor in a community health agency. A woman comes in to talk about a co-worker, who is acting more and more disorganized recently. She thinks her co-worker may be schizophrenic because he talks about noises he hears in his walls and recently has engaged in bizarre behavior. She is worried about her own safety, as he seems to be attached to her and she is the only one at work who he talks to about personal concerns. She wants to know what to do.

§ You are an intern counselor in a community clinic. One of your clients tells you that she is applying for the same graduate program that you are in. You have been accepted to the doctoral program and know that if she is accepted, you will see her frequently and may even be a teaching assistant for some of her classes.

§ You are an intern school counselor. One of your students’ parents tells you she is applying for the same graduate program that you are in. You have been accepted to the doctoral program and know that if she is accepted, you will see her frequently and may even be a teaching assistant for some of her classes.

§ A colleague at your agency has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress of her difficult caseload. She has quit taking notes, resulting in an inability to keep track of what transpired during previous sessions and has been mixing up clients’ issues. You know she has multiple stressors at home as she is caring for her ailing mother and her two troubled teenage sons.

§ You are meeting with a client who is crying and telling you that you are her last hope because her husband beats her, but there are no available beds at the shelter. She will not involve the police because her husband is a decorated police captain.
For each of the above scenarios:
Demonstrate through narrative your understanding of the primary tenets of ACA’s code of ethics and how specific codes are relevant to EACH scenario.
Who are the “stakeholders” affected by each ethical situation?
What options did you consider in the situation? What did you decide to do and why?
What were the potential consequences of each decision? Are there legal implications relevant to the dilemma and how do the actions you chose comply with the law(s)?
In any given agency, what system of checks and balances should be implemented to protect the 5 the ethical principles: beneficence & non-maleficence; fidelity & responsibility; integrity; justice; and respect for others’ rights and dignity.
Paper must be submitted in APA format. In-text citations are required. Spelling and grammatical errors will significantly affect your final grade.

3. Review the relevant ethics codes
4. Know the applicable laws and regulations
5. Obtain consultation
6. Consider possible and probable courses of action
7. Consider the consequences of various decisions
8. Choose what appears to be the best course of action
