COLLAPSE
In Chapter 12, please review the theories of why people choose each other as mates and the ethical dilemma question. How would you apply/use one of the theories to counsel or advise either the man or the woman in this ethical dilemma? Discuss how you apply one of the statements in the NASW Code of Ethics to guide your approach.
If a man, or woman, came to me as a client wanting counsel, or advice, on what to do if they are set to marry someone they are not in love with, I would initially need to find out why. If the why is because they do not have similar values then, using the Congruence in Value Theory could help to understand why a client could be having feelings of not wanting to marry. The Congruence in Values Theory states, “Our value system consciously and unconsciously guides us in selecting a mate who has similar values.” (Zastrow & Hessenauer, 2018 p. 538) Another tool social workers can use to guide their client through the ethical dilemma is, The National Association of Social Workers, (NASW) Code of Ethics. The NASW provides a code to follow, helping to guide clients and is, “designed to help social workers identify relevant considerations when professional obligations conflict or ethical uncertainties arise.” (National Association of Social Workers (NASW), 2021) In this case, understanding the importance of human relationships, as stated in the code, is important to understand in situations like these. If the values do not match, but the lifestyle and image the client had in their head of what their life would like is what they are given by their mate, a dilemma appears. Using the above-mentioned to help guide me while working with this client will hopefully help the client to reach his/her own decision that he/she is happy with.
