psyc 308 Article summary and evaluation assignments

The idea is to first summarize, in your own words, the main points of the article; the summaries should be like an extended abstract of the article. Next, in your evaluation section, you should explicitly state why you agree or disagree with some particular key aspect of the article while using historical concepts or analysis you have learned in the course lectures and readings. You are expected to make a minimum of 10 separate points related to course concepts and readings. As such, the evaluations are your opportunity to show what you are learning in the course and are meant to replace the need for exams. If you choose to, you are allowed to work in pairs on your article assignments. If so, you must indicate who you are working with, as a comment, when you both submit your work. Each pair will receive the same grade.
Quoting from articles is strongly discouraged because it does not show understanding; you should only quote when you feel you have a very specific reason to retain the wording of a particular claim made by the author, which is very unlikely. If you feel you must specifically refer to an article mentioned in one of the articles upon which your assignment is based, which although unlikely is at least conceivable in the evaluation section, you can use a secondary citation (e.g., Driver-Linn, 2003, as cited in Buss, 2020).
Because the assignments are based on a single article, there is also no need to continually cite the article. There is still, as always, an urgent need to put the article in your own words and to avoid any appearance of plagiarism. Note as well that providing a citation after a statement you make in your assignment does not mean that you do not need to paraphrase the content. Finally, sources from outside the course are not allowed because the evaluations are meant to show your understanding of course concepts and readings.Quoting from articles is strongly discouraged because it does not show understanding; you should only quote when you feel you have a very specific reason to retain the wording of a particular claim made by the author, which is very unlikely.
