Purpose
To continue practicing analysis, this time of an art object that includes images, sound, words, and movement to achieve its purpose; also, to begin thinking about other kinds of “texts” that communicate with a specific purpose, outside of academic arguments.
Time
About 30-45 minutes
Steps
Watch the music video twice. During the first watch, just watch and listen, not taking any notes.
As you watch the second time, take notes on the following:
-What do you see? (This might include static images but it also includes what movement do you see, what gestures, what facial expressions, etc.)
-What do you hear? (Including sounds, music, lyrics)
Consider what stood out to you about the music video. Then, take notes on the following:
-What is at least one purpose of this music video? (There are multiple purposes, and you can identify more than one here if you want.)
-What is one moment that stood out to you as especially effective in communicating that purpose? In that moment, what did you see, and what did you hear? (i.e., describe it)
-How did what you saw and heard in this moment help the creators achieve that purpose? (i.e., analyze it) What is the significance of the moment you described? How does that significance connect to the purpose you identified?
