The term paper is a critical review of three published epidemiologic studies on silica and lung cancer. Write a Critical review of three published Epidemiological studies.
Chose a topic in occupational health of interest to you. The topics should focus on an association between an occupational exposure and an adverse health outcome.
TOPIC: crystalline silica and lung cancer
Pick three epidemiologic studies that have examined the associations using different methods. This could be totally different designs of smaller differences, such as different ways of recruiting participants or assessing exposure. However, the bigger the differences in methods, the better for having something to discuss in the paper.
Papers:
1. Occupational exposure to crystalline silica and the risk of lung cancer in Canadian men
Linda Kachuri, 2013
2. Exposure-Response Analysis and Risk Assessment for Lung Cancer in Relationship to Silica Exposure: A 44-Year Cohort Study of 34,018 Workers
Yuewei Liu, 2013
https://doi.org/10.1093/aje/kwt139
3. A nested case-control study of lung cancer among silica exposed workers in China
J K McLaughlin, 1992
The final paper should be no longer than 10 pages, exclusive of tables and references suing reasonable type fonts and margins. The paper should include all of the following:
Introduction to, and brief description of, the exposure-response relationship you have selected and major design features and results of each study, including a comparison between the papers
Outline of the three themes for comparison and an in-depth discussion of each. Including how the papers differ on each theme and the impact that it may have had on the study results
Summarize the strengths and limitations of each study, including the direction and magnitude of biases and how these may have influenced results
Discuss possible improvements to the studies, or propose a new study to examine the same exposure-response relationship and explain how this approach would be an improvement over the studies examined in the term project
Marking/Evaluation Scheme
The paper will be graded in terms of organization and clarity, accuracy and thoroughness of descriptions, application of principles learned in the course, and critical thinking. Marks will be distributed as:
( 5 marks) Clear description of the major design features of each study
(10 marks) Identifying the major sources of bias in the three papers including the direction, strength, and effect on the results
(15 marks) Three themes where you critically compare and contrast strengths and limitations of studies
( 5 marks) Formatting and presentation, e.g., writing style, references, tables
I have uploaded 3 documents with some background information that was done for the papers and the topic. As well as the themes I selected in the PowerPoint file I have uploaded. THEMES: 1. Study population, 2. Exposure measurement, 3. Confounding variables
