Sunnyside Healthcare is expanding and will be opening a new 150 bed hospital. The executive leadership has charged you with developing a proposal for one of the new units that will fall under the Health Information Management Department at the facility. The unit can be anything you wish, such as information governance, coding, clinical documentation improvement, compliance, release of information, etc. The proposal should include the following components:
1. Identify the types of staff/roles that will need to be hired for the unit. Develop an organization chart for this unit (see example on p. 803 of the Oachs/Watters text). Develop a position (job) description for one of the roles.
2. Develop a plan for recruitment, selection, and retention of employees.
3. Provide information regarding space and equipment needs, ergonomics and aesthetics for the work space (i.e. what impact does the aesthetics of the space have on productivity, will you have remote workers that need space when they come in to the office, etc.).
4. Establish an internal quality management program to include the following:
a. Identify the key processes of the department
b. Identify the primary customers of each process
c. Method to consult with the primary customers to identify their service needs and expectations
d. Develop performance measures and key performance indicators for each key process based on the customer’s needs and expectations. These need to be specific, for example, a work unit may choose to measure coder productivity with a key performance indicator of coding at least 20 charts per day.
e. Develop a plan to monitor the program and improve continuously.
5. Develop a budget for this unit that includes revenue (if applicable), capital, operating, and personnel (see sample budget). Think about items you’d need in the capital, personnel, and operational budget. The budget should be estimates based on your knowledge/research. Keep in mind this is an initial proposal for the work unit, so it is fine to keep it at a high level.
6. In proposing this new unit, you may need to negotiate in support of its needs and goals. Develop a negotiation strategy. What approach will you take? What negotiating leverage do you have, and where can you compromise?
7. Identify the type of leadership style you recommend be used in this work unit and why that approach will be most effective for the employees in this unit. Include inclusive leadership strategies, and the type of leader who would work well with decision making among executive leadership.
This assignment includes components from each of the units in this course, so be sure to look back at all units, especially the readings from the Oachs/Watters text, as well as other reputable resources. Be sure to cite each source (a minimum of 3 is required) and include a reference list.
