The introduction of TCP/IP networking from the late 1960s through 1980 revolutionized the Internet for government and educational institutions. Eventually, commercial and private entities wanted this “Internet” as well and we experienced an “Internet boom” in the 1990s. TCP/IP changed the direction of technology; however, TCP/IP is not secure. IPSEC (or IP Security) is a protocol that secures Internet communication…encryption, authentication, integrity, and confidentiality. IPSEC is versatile in that it can be implemented in a local area network between a few computers in a classroom; or within a virtual private network tunnel. For example, an IoT device in your home that is “tunneled in” securely to an App on your smartphone.
