Disaster Management, or Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (DPEM), is a broad term used to describe the processes related to dealing with an emergent situation. For the purposes of our discussion, Disasters may be defined as “natural, technological and [or] human oriented events that disrupt the normal functioning of the economy and society on a large scale” (Eisenberg, 2007, p. 1). Information Technology (IT) “is broadly defined as including computing and communications technology; and ‘Disaster Management’ is defined as encompassing mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts undertaken to reduce the impact of disasters” (Eisenberg, 2007, p. 1).
In this week’s Learning Module, the concept of Informatics in Disaster Management was introduced. Examples were given regarding the use of IT in DPEM including Communication, Management, Surveillance and Telemedicine. Respond to this post with a one paragraph reply about which of these four areas most interests you personally. Include one example from one of your textbooks or another credible literary source.
