11.3: Cross-Cultural Contact

Upload your final presentation to Canvas for the chapter you signed up for. For your online presentation, you may write a paper or do a presentation where you can choose whatever audio or video style works for you. You are welcome to upload your paper, or a recording of you reading your paper out loud to the class, present a video, visual presentation (Prezi Video is a great option), song, or whatever you like. When choosing what to present, ask yourself: How will this style of presentation help you both explain your topic to your classmates and helo further your own understanding of the topic? Please note that if you choose to present a visual, you must actively present it, just as you would in class. Visuals/videos/songs/art need to be introduced and contextualized. You may choose to go into depth about something from your section, or do an overview and summary of your section, explaining the main points in your presentation.
Make sure you consider the following when putting together your presentation:
1. Outside academic resources. This is a research project, and as such should teach your classmates information that they cannot find in the book. Use our textbook as a starting point to kick off your research. You must include in-text citations and a works cited page in your presentation. This can be integrated in your presentation, or uploaded as a separate text document. Visit the MLA module for additional information.
2. Clearly state your chapter and section, and let your audience know what you will be focusing on. Depth? Breadth?
3. You may choose to relate your section to current events. How can we learn from the past? How have politics/race relations/etc. changed? Or maybe they haven’t–address that! How have works of art influenced modern media? You have the freedom here to choose something that interests you. Please note that this is not required, but is an interesting option.
4. Make sure you use a media format that you are familiar with. Canvas does not support powerpoint files, so if you are using powerpoint, it must be exported as a video file, timed with the audio playing. Prezi Video is a very popular option and easy to use. I do not recommend inserting a google slides link, as those often run into problems with permissions and I cannot view them. You are not required to have a visual component, so no stress! You can record video and audio and upload it directly through the assignment link; nothing fancy is required. That being said, you have the flexibility to be as creative as you like.
Your presentation should be 5-7 minutes long. Papers must be 3-5 pages long. To upload, click the “record/upload media” button. This will allow you to record a new video and/or audio, or upload an existing file. Please email me with any questions throughout this process. View the grading rubric for additional info.
