First get rich, then get a democracy” (Rod Hague et al.). Many scholars believe that modernization and economic development can provide a state with good conditions for democratization. However, in practice, democratization is not always the outcome of these processes. Comparing at least two cases, please critically analyse the different impacts modernization can have on democratization processes and outcomes.
– The task is not just to have an opinion, but also to draw on the theories and build a reasoned argument that they can support with some evidence.
– I wanted the question to emphasise more that there is variation in outcomes and the students should try to explain this – e.g. some state democratize, some don’t, some partially democratise etc… – The students need to ensure they are undertaking critical analysis and also that they are considering the variable impact economic development can have for regime outcomes.
