2022 Cultivating Opportunity & Realizing Excellence (CORE) Program Application

cultivating Opportunity & Realizing Excellence (CORE) Leadership Program is a cohort-modeled leadership program that focuses on providing opportunities for connection and exposure to medicine and health sciences through the Georgetown University Medical Center. The goals of this program are:
To provide opportunities for exposure, experience, and reflection in medicine and health sciences for undergraduate students interested in pursuing medical studies
To nurture student’s commitments to advancing opportunities for populations who lack equitable access to health care and/or are committed to serving the underserved in the United States
Part 1: What are the specific opportunity gaps you have encountered?
Part 2: How will you use the CORE program to make your way into medicine or the health professions?
Coming from a Muslim family, culture was really a big gap that held me from doing many things. I was unable and still am unable to avail certain opportunities due to time restrictions and cultural obligations. Being a girl on top of that really hindered many opportunities. I am in the US army which really helped me get out of my comfort zone and look forward to new opportunities but still despite this, I have restrictions and cultural gaps.
Moreover, I feel like there are certain things I could have availed but due to discrimination, some things were not favored on my end.
Being the oldest of 5 siblings, also placed all the expectations of a bright future and being an example on me, I have to keep my cultural restrictions and fulfill my parent’s dreams all together which really becomes difficult.
