What if there was a new Texas Constitution? (due October 1, 11:59pm):
Texas has had several constitutions and they were all the product of the times in which they
were written. The most recent, ratified in 1876, is very much the product of the times. For
example, the governor is weak in the current 1876 Constitution precisely because Texans at
the time feared a strong executive. The 1845 Constitution contains homestead protection
because of Texans’ historical experience with land seizure. In your paper you should explore:
1:) Summarize how the context of the time in which each constitution was written shaped
the document.
2:) If Texas were to write a 2021 Constitution, what current conditions or
events might shape the construction of the Constitution?
3:) If you could add one thing to
that 2021 Constitution, what would you add? Why?
