What ideas do you have, before reading this chapter, about some aspects of K-12 science teaching and the science curriculum that have their origins in the period between 1955 and 1980? Identify and describe at least one.
Describe two issues related to the cold war and other societal concerns that had an impact on K-12 science education in the U.S. from 1950 to 1970. What was the impact? Why were these curricular changes important to events for later 20th and 21st-century science curricula?
Describe two unique characteristics of science curricula found in schools at this time, 1960-1980. What new goals were advocated in school science? How does this differ from 1940–1960? Do we see these ideas still with us today?
Provide a description of the development of one curriculum reform, either Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or general science. Identify the people involved, motives for change, and what occurred. Compare your textbook artifacts with the history described in this chapter. Describe and provide evidence to support statements in the chapter from the artifact textbook.
Describe the theoretical support for the curriculum reform movement of the 1960s.
Summarize the success of the new science program reforms.
Does your K-12 science curriculum in your own classroom today relate more to 1970 or the present? Explain your response. Compare your present practices in teaching science to students with what was done in the past as described in this chapter (refer to ALEX or other states’ courses of study). Explain your results.
