In the file I have attached please read the following, pages 56-80.
1. What, do you think, is the film’s most striking and powerful “cinema image” – and what meaning does it convey to you? Use Tarkovsky’s definition when selecting that image: “The image becomes authentically cinematic when (amongst other things) not only does it live within time, but time also lives within it, even within each separate frame.”
2. Find a sequence in the film that forms a complete cinematic haiku (the way Tarkovsky describes it in the chapter from “Sculpting in Time”).
Write down this haiku as a language poem, following the form of the traditional haiku (like in this example):
Coldly shining moon;
Near the ancient monastery
A wolf is howling.
Silent in the field
A butterfly was flying
Then it fell asleep.
Notice that there are only four images/observations here (including the final line) – but the rhythm is also important. In the case of cinema, this would be a rhythm of montage.
