As you read through the narratives of travelers in foreign lands, and description of “exotic,” “foreign” goods being consumed in places far away from where they are produced, think about what it says about the cultures of these places. How are people describing their encounters? Is it marked by curiosity, hostility, openness, acceptance and/or tolerance? What insight do these narratives provide for the journeys the travelers had to undertake?
