Preparing a Memorable Elevator Speech

An elevator speech is a clear, brief message or “commercial” about you. It communicates who you are, what you’re looking for and how you can benefit a company or organization. It’s typically about 60 seconds, the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator.

An elevator speech is a sentence or two that introduces you to someone else during the length of an elevator ride, which is about 60 seconds. Basically, an elevator speech describes what you do and how it can benefit your listeners. For example, if you work in the travel industry and are meeting potential clients, you might say, “I’m Tia Patterson, and I help travelers design the trip of their lifetime.” If you are introducing yourself to a corporate customer, you might say “I’m Tia Patterson, and I work with companies who want to provide travel incentives that encourage sales and business growth.” As in both examples, after you introduce yourself by name, explain what you do in terms that your listener will find interesting. Use a short, memorable phrase that stimulates interest. Speak with a firm, confident voice. If you sense that your listener is interested, be prepared to exchange business cards or offer to make contact through a phone call or e-mail message.
Use 1-3 of the criteria below:
(You will eventually record the entire elevator speech before the semester is over so if you would like to complete 1-4 that would be perfectly fine.)
