Caccini was one of the first composers of opera, as well as two styles of singing: recitative (think “reciting”) and monody. Monody is the term we use for a solo voice with a single or a few instruments accompanying the voice. He describes this style of music in this reading, saying he is trying to “speak musically” and that this way of combining a single voice with a stringed instrument “had as much power to move the soul’s affections.” This style contrasted to many voices singing together without instruments.
