How Can Police Ethics Be Improved

Special Topic: Ethics in Policing
Introduction: Chapter 4 is titled “Ethical Essentials: Doing Right When No One is Watching.” There is considerable information regarding different issues in the chapter regarding ethics in criminal justice and the police function in particular. Types of ethics, such as — relative ethics, absolute ethics, noble cause corruption, and others are examined by the textbook authors and get the chapter off to a good start. Information outside the textbook is abundant and can be used to expand the chapter material.
The Assignment: Peak and Herold explore this topic and ask the following questions:
What specific behaviors are clearly unethical for criminal justice employees;
What criteria should guide these employees in their work;
To what extent, if any, should the public allow criminal justice employees to violate citizens’ right in order to maintain public order.
There is information in the chapter that examines many of these problems. The focus is on police, who find themselves in many more situations where corruption and brutality can occur than do judges and corrections personnel. However, it is permissible to compare and contrast these criminal justice systems if the focus of your response leads in a direction to do so.
The assignment is to be completed as an essay assignment rather than a formal research paper; however, they share some similarities. Affix your name and the assignment topic as a header on the first page. The paper requires 5 or more numbered pages, excluding the reference page, using an Arial or Verdana 12-point font. Use 4 or more reference sources — the textbook would be a source, just include in the reference list. Use bold print and double-space for easier viewing. Use the standard one-inch margin rule that is consistent with essay writing and formal paper assignments. The last page of the essay is the reference page. It needs to be formatted in a manner that the source can be retrieved — and cite the sources within the body of the paper to prevent plagiarism.
Comments: Ethics is defined as, “a set of rules or values that spell out appropriate human conduct.” General textbook information and the outside sources researched regarding police ethics can be used in responding to the topic question — this will allow for discretion in the focus and direction taken in answering the question. It is also permissible to provide your personal opinion and explain how it would be helpful in improving ethical outcomes and why you take this position.
