Ask Yourself About Unmotivated Students

When she asked teachers what their biggest struggles are, one issue came up on a regular basis: student motivation. In the attached podcast she presents 5 questions to ask yourself about unmotivated students.

After listening to the podcast, spend some time reflecting and improving your role in student motivation. Jennifer Gonzalez encourages teachers to spend time learning about student motivation. Researching student motivation is crucial to impacting student achievement. We can’t control outside factors, but we can control what goes on in our own classrooms. Reflect on your time with your students, by asking yourself:
1.) How is your relationship with your students, really?
2.) How much choice do your students actually have?
3.) Are you relying heavily on carrots and sticks…or jolly ranchers?
4.) Do your words contribute to a growth mindset or a fixed mindset?
5.)What are you doing to make your content relevant to student’s lives?
After reflecting on each question, shift your focus to what you perceive your “weakest” question to be. Gently discuss your “weakest question” using knowledge gained from the podcast and your textbook by Wednesday. Please respond only to two of your classmates who share your same “weakness.”
