The influence of the Ancient Greek culture is important in the extreme–in our understanding of humanity, its presence in our ideas about civilization, and in the very fabric of our world. Those influences are especially evident in the architecture of America (and, for that matter, in Europe as well).
For this discussion, identify two buildings in America or Europe, built after 1750, which reflect architectural elements of ancient Greek architecture. (You can find them by searching Google with phrases like “Greek Revival Buildings in the US” or “Greek revival architecture” or “Neo-Greek architecture”. Please be aware that you will be evaluated on how well your selecte dbuilding shows Greek-inspired architecture.). Give us the name and location of the building, the architect, and the date. If you can, upload an image of one of the buildings. Then discuss the following things about one of those buildings:
1)What architectural elements are seen in that structure? Be specific, and use the proper terminology for those elements. (Calling “Ionic columns” something like “Pillars with little curlicue thingies on the top” is going to lose you points every single time.)
2) What is the original function of that building? (You may need to cite the information in this section)
3) How can you connect the original function of the building to Ancient Greek philosophical ideas? If you cannot, say so, and speculate on why the architect of the later building would select Greek styles to use.
