The assignment: Come up with one plausible scenario that explains, down to the genetic level, how speciation can happen in living organisms.
The directions: Create a story about speciation that is at least 350 words but no more than 400 words in length following the detailed directions below. You can use any organism, including flies, however you must come up with a totally different scenario than the one discussed in the instructors video. You can even make up magical creatures if you like; it does not need to be based on real organisms.
You should include the following information in your story:
What type of speciation has occurred? (allopatric or sympatric)
Include two mechanisms of evolution (i.e. Genetic drift, natural selection, mutation, sexual selection, gene flow) in your story.
Include details about the reproductive isolating barriers that evolved. Were they prezygotic or postygotic? Be specific.
Your story should be written with scientific terminology that you are learning in this class (i.e. phenotype, gene pool and/or allele frequencies, gene flow, population diverges, etc.).
You must BOLD the requested terms (i.e. allopatric, etc) in your paragraph so it is easy to find.
Make sure your writing is your own. If there is significant overlap with the internet and/or other students in the class, you will be assigned a zero. Please do your own work!
Somewhere in your submission you need to include the word count for the story.
