Examine Technology Options

Overview
Information Technology
This week you will focus on Information Technology (IT) within the accounting industry. It is not surprising that you will spend a whole week on this topic due to the rise of computers, the Internet, and technology in general. Computers are the main means for how all financial accounting information is reported and processed. This makes it even more important for the auditors to understand the use of information technology and how to regulate the process. The topics this week will explore the use of information technology, controls used to regulate IT, and how to ensure the integrity of the systems. Many of the accounting tasks that are performed today use software, such as QuickBooks or PeachTree. Technology has made accounting record-keeping much easier and more accurate.

There are many reasons why computerized software has become more popular. One of the reasons is the ease of use. Once the entries have been made, the organization is able to quickly create the required financial statements. In addition, conducting trial balances is a process that can be automated. The accounting software technology now allows for trial balances to be completed whenever the organization chooses. This means that organizations can conduct them more often and find any errors sooner. This makes it easier to identify the transactions that have not been entered correctly. Finally, computerized accounting software allows for lower user errors and more controls in the accounting operations. Based on the user’s log-in, an organization can set up individual roles and any access the staff is able to have. With more automation, there is less room for error and more room for more accurate and reliable financial statements.
