The Research Argument Essay
Requirements & Clarified Explanation
MUST be a total of5-6 FULL pages in length.
This is a Research Argument Essay regarding the topic of Fixing Cultural/Societal Problems; you will pick a specific problem YOU see in our culture/society/world to focus on.
EXAMPLE: You may believe that our planet is in trouble due to pollution & the gross amounts of trash humans produce per year. This could be seen as a cultural problem due to Americans being taught to be consumers from the womb & one doesn’t have to look far to see how society views littering & polluting as a whole.
First: Introduce your topic & present an arguable stance regarding this problem & its possible solution (Intro. Paragraph & Thesis Statement),
Then: Prove that the problem is real–& that people should care—by giving a brief history of the problem, & explain why your topic should be taken seriously. (Body Paragraphs)
Then: Tell us what solutions/fixes have already been tried, by whom, & why they aren’t completely eradicating the problem. At least TWO previously tried solutions must be presented in your essay (Body Paragraphs)
Next: Present & logically explain your new & unique solution to help fix/solve this issue; MUST be at least ¾ of a page of the paper to 1 page maximum in total. This needs to be a “Plan of Action” of sorts; if money was not a limiting factor, what would you do to actually put an end to this problem (which is your topic).
Last: Write the conclusion of the essay. The solution section is NOT your conclusion! The conclusion of the paper should represent the entire paper: remind us why this topic is important & why we should care; reiterate your thesis, but not verbatim; and wrap up the essay.

REMEMBER: This is an ideology essay, so always ask yourself:
What are the messages I am getting about the way things “ought to be” or what is “right & true” beliefs accepted by the general public?
How am I getting these messages? (e.g. TV shows, commercials, sermons)
Who is benefitting from these messages?
Who is being “hurt” by the messages?
SIX credible SOURCES (minimum) are a requirement. Remember WebMD, Wiki, & all dictionaries AND encyclopedias are not credible, academic sources.
3a. This essay will have a combination of “open research” & “closed research”; You must use TWO of the articles found in the “Closed Research” Module in your paper as sources.
Open Research: sources you find yourself from credible sources in order to write an essay.
Closed Research: sources you are given by a professor to choose from in order to write an essay.
3b. This essay will also contain “primary” & “secondary” sources; three of the six sources should be primary sources.
Primary Source(s): a source or sources from which you get the majority of your information.
Secondary Source(s): a source or sources from which you get tidbits of information, e.g. a single quote or a statistic.
3c. You are required to use Ivy Tech’s library to begin your research.
You MUST turn in a Works Cited page with your rough drafts & final paper.

You MUST use a properly formatted MLA “Block Quote” in this paper: only one is allowed & it must be double-spaced, indented, & formatted properly. (This skill will be taught in class or via video link.)
Block Quote Definition: direct quotations that are more than four, full typed lines when typed in the essay must be formatted as an MLA Block Quote.
Please Note that for this class: eight, full typed lines is the maximum length allowed for an MLA Block Quote.
You MUST use one properly formatted subtitle; three is the maximum number allowed; this skill will be taught in class or directions will be provided; there are subtitles in the student example paper.
The solution section is worth 50pts.
The words “I” & “you” are NOT permitted in your papers unless it is in adirect quote. The word “it” may be used 1x per ¶. Any overage will be a 2pt deduction—on every paper for the entire semester.
Margins: top & both sides should be 1 inch; bottom should be set to .5 (please note: this is different from typical MLA formatting; however, it is a professor-specific requirement); also, do not forget to turn your “widow/orphan” off (please note: this is different from typical MLA formatting; however, it is a professor-specific requirement); & to click/mark the “do not add space between paragraphs of the same style” option.
Font & Size of Font: Times New Roman, 12pt font. (ALWAYS)
The heading will be double spaced, as shown in class or via video link.
You MUST bring two copies of your rough draft and all sources each day we peer edit. IF CLASS IS ONLINE, you will be required to participate in peer-editing via discussion boards, or in another method as directed by the professor.
You MUST upload all rough drafts, final drafts, works cited page(s), AND sources to Canvas; remember, a URL address does not count as a source; the complete source must be downloaded from the original source (as shown during the Ivy Tech Library lesson) & then uploaded to Canvas/IvyLearn under the proper assignment along with the draft due.
Late/short drafts & papers ARE SUBJECT TO THE LATE WORK & LENGTH POLICIES.
