Read the entire paper for a sense of the author’s topic and viewpoint.
What are the strengths of the paper? Identify the things that worked well for you as a reader.
Paraphrase or quote the author’s thesis. Is it clearly stated at the end of the introductory paragraph? If not, where in the essay is it found?
How does the writer provide specific evidence in each paragraph to support that paragraph’s main idea? How do paragraphs relate back to the thesis of the essay?
Identify the discussion paragraph that is the most specifically and clearly supported?
Identify paragraphs that could use more specific support to more fully develop the topic sentence. Explain.
Analyze the organizational strategy or strategies the writer uses in this essay. Identify where in the essay one of these strategies is effectively used.
Identify one way in which you think this essay could be improved.
