Designing a “Ideal” Treatment Facility (Abnormal Psychology Course)

Diathesis-Stress (D-S) model of abnormal behavior (introduced on p. 33)
1. Diathesis-Stress model – refers to the fact that there are certain tendencies that people have and when combined with certain experiences increase the likelihood of developing abnormal behaviors.
a. Diathesis – means being genetically or psychologically predisposed (ie., more likely) to suffer from a disease or disorder.
b. Predisposition – can mean the ability of the disease or disorder to remain “dormant” until one becomes exposed to environmental stressors.
c. Stress – different situations or environmental events that can act as triggers to increase the likelihood of abnormal behaviors.
Applying this model of understanding:
1. The D-S model explains that the emergence of abnormal behaviors is due to the interaction or combination of multiple sources, such as internal and external factors. A teen may have always been anxious about experiencing new situations (predisposition) but was able to cope. However, she recently experienced cyber-bullying prior to entering high school as a ninth-grader. This exacerbated her normal anxiousness response to the point that she began to vomit each school morning. Soon she was unable to attend school. Her normal functional anxiousness has developed into dysfunctional anxiety. Neither alone has caused this dysfunction, rather it appears that her predisposition towards being anxious combined with a trigger of being bullied, has significantly shaped her behavior.
Chapter 4 Learning Objectives:
#4.3 Understand how developmental (age-related factors) and sociocultural factors affect the expression of anxiety.
#4.4. Describe the critical elements that comprise each of the different disorders (d/o).
#4.5 Identify biological and psychological factors related to the development of these
d/o.
Designing a “Ideal” Treatment Facility
1. Create an ideal treatment facility for a specific anxiety d/o chosen by you. You have just received a grant, so you will have an abundance of resources to create this facility; funding is not a problem. Use the following questions as guidelines to help better understand the D-S Model and how it applies to the information in objectives 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5, ie., your responses below should be meaningfully shaped, when available, by the information presented in the chapter.
i. What anxiety disorder do you specialize in?
ii. Where is your treatment facility located?
iii. What does your treatment facility look like?
iv. What are the diagnostic requirements to be admitted as a patient?
v. Is there a minimum stay?
vi. What treatments (at least two) are offered? These should be evidenced based (cite the sources)
vii. Who do you plan to hire and what credentials or training do they need?
viii. What is your target population?
ix. Come up with a mission and vision statement for your facility.
x. Break down the cost of the treatment.
xi. Do you accept health insurance? Why or why not?
Your responses should be typed in APA format with a title page and contain an introduction and concluding paragraph. You do not have to include the numbers of the guiding question presented above but, should follow their sequence when completing your questions. There is no required minimal number of pages, rather respond to each question in complete responses and with citations when needed.
