Implementing a Health Information System
Although change is inevitable in the field of health care, the introduction of a new information system can nevertheless bring considerable stress to an organization and its staff, especially if the implementation strategy is not well defined and the actual implementation of that system not well planned. The more care that is taken to identify and address even small details and concerns upfront, the less likely it is that there will be major headaches later on.
To prepare for this Discussion, consider the types and purposes of systems that are implemented in health care organizations and the needs of the diverse stakeholders (including providers, staff, and patients) who use these systems. Then select a specific type of system that is used in a health care organization.
By Day 4, post a comprehensive response to the following:
As a member of a cross-functional team charged with leading the implementation of this new system at your health care organization, what are two challenges that your team might expect to encounter during the implementation process? Why?
What do you consider to be two critical factors for the successful implementation of that system? How do you think these two approaches will help mitigate the anticipated challenges?
Read a selection of your colleagues postings.
By Day 6, respond to at least one of your colleagues postings in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a probing question.
Expand on the colleagues posting with additional insight and resources.
Offer polite disagreement or critique, supported with evidence.
In addition, you may respond as follows:
Offer and support an opinion.
Validate an idea with your own experience.
Make a suggestion or comment that guides or facilitates the discussion.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of your colleagues comments. You are not required to post these final insights.
