Ethics Framework

Once you have read “The Principles of Prevention, Precaution, Prudent Vigilance, Polluter Pays, Gambler’s, and Proaction,” click on the Ethics Resources tab to Ethical Decision Making. Under the Introductory Articles, click on the link for A Framework for Ethical Decision Making. Read the page that comes up – and note which approach (i.e., Utilitarian approach) aligns best with your beliefs and values. At the bottom of the page, click on the PDF and save it.
Click on the Ethics Resources link to Ethical Decision Making. Scroll down to Approaches to Ethical Decision Making. There are 5 approaches listed – choose the one that aligns best with your beliefs and values, and read through all of the information provided about that approach.
Using the materials provided, and others you may have discovered, develop your step-by-step ethical decision-making framework.
Although it’s difficult to choose just one approach for each ethical decision, please include a couple of sentences about the approach in which your beliefs and values align.
Please explain the purpose of each step in your framework. For example, a first step might be to figure out what the ethical issue is that needs to be addressed and then who has decision-making authority (step #2). To identify the ethical issue, the appropriate codes of ethics and legislation may be examined (agency policies). Perhaps experts need to be consulted about some issues, or maybe a group needs to address the issue and the group members need to be involved. Once all of the facts are known, a decision can be reached (step #3).
