Part I: When Europeans arrive in Okonkwo’s village, the impacts are multiple, but one of the results of their presence is the construction of a new kind of government and new forms of law; a key element to colonization. What are some of the new legal and governmental practices? How do these contrast with the traditional forms of law and order? How do these impacts vary throughout the novel?
Part II: Discussion Questions. (Choose one of the following questions to address in the first part of your initial response)
1. Olunde – Elesin’s son – comes home from his studies in England once he hears the King has died and that his father, by tradition, must die as well. Discussion his return, his experiences abroad, and the ways he either stays with or denies traditions. What are his responsibilities, hopes, and motivations throughout the play? Use textual evidence to support your points.
2. Both the play and our previous novel, Things Fall Apart, deal with the impacts of colonization on traditional cultures. What narratives strategies and plotlines do the works have in common to discuss the impacts of colonization?
3. Language plays a large role in the play. Soyinka uses two forms of English where one is a Nigerian Pidgin English or a blend of English and languages spoken in Nigeria and the other British English. Discuss the ways this use of two languages creates a difference between the colonized and the colonizer. What is the impact of the two forms of language in relation to traditions and culture?
4. Like language, the use of proverbs and metaphors is a key part of the play. Choose one of the proverbs or metaphors, such as the “Not I Bird” speech on pages 10-12 or one of the proverbs listed in Richard’s article, and discuss how the proverb or metaphor acts as a connector between traditional Yoruba culture and the new culture of the colonizers.

OBJECTIVE
For Think Pieces #1, you will choose one of the primary texts from Modules One – Four to discuss in more depth. Your think piece must be a literary analysis of the work; you may use any information from our class lectures, class discussion, additional materials (videos and handouts). Your Think Piece must be a literary analysis of the work and will focus on a specific aspect of the primary text, reflect clear, composed writing that engages the tenants of close reading, and demonstrate thoughtful discussion.

ASSIGNMENT
Here are the requirements for your Think Piece:
You will choose one of the primary texts to address; the additional materials may be cited, but your paper must focus on the primary text. You will choose the topic you address. This can be drawn from the discussion board questions and postings as well as ideas from the additional materials. There will be a discussion board for brainstorming ideas if you would like to get some additional feedback on your thoughts from your classmates and me.
An introduction and thesis statement that reflect the theme or ideas you will discuss and the text you will be using as evidence to prove your conclusions.
Contain complete body paragraphs with strong topic sentences, use of the text, analysis, and transition statements. The body paragraphs will be a close reading of the materials and textual analysis.
A conclusion paragraph that brings together the ideas from the body paragraphs and reinforces your thesis statements.
No works cited is needed unless you use sources outside of the course materials.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND FORMATTING
Your Think Piece must be 4-6 pages. Please use Times, Arial or Calibri font, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, with 1” margins. Cover pages are not necessary; instead, include your name, my name, course name and number, and date in the upper left-hand corner of the first page. As well, please include last name and page numbers in a header on all subsequent pages. Give your essay a title, centered, and then start the “body” of your text. You will submit your think piece as a Word or PDF file to Dropbox. Think Piece #1 is worth 100 points toward your final grade and will be graded via a rubric and specific comments in the feedback section of the rubric.
