Negations in the News

The purpose of this assignment is to actively apply class lessons to a real complex negotiation. This can be a business negotiation (e.g., T-Mobile Sprint, Disney-Fox), political negotiation (e.g., Brexit, Paris Climate agreement, US-China trade negotiations) or mix (e.g., Amazon-NYC, EU-Pfizer vaccine). You can use a Web Resource from this week as a launching off point, but you may need to read more about the negotiation to address the questions. Answer the following three questions.
1. Provide an overview of the parties involved and their key interests in the negotiation. 50 points.
2. Highlight three or more class concepts that apply within the article. Be specific on your use of concepts and be clear about where you see the application. 75 points.
3. Conclude with an assessment of the outcome (or current status) and what you think key negotiators did well and/or could have improved upon, given what you have learned in class. 25 points.
For article(s) you select, please include a link at the end of your paper.
Your response should be1000-1800 words. Going over is okay as long as the material is relevant. Please answer the questions in order. Late submissions will lose 15 points per day late. Grading criteria are summarized below:
Question 1: have you identified all of the parties involved, including those “on the sidelines” who affect the negotiation? Does your summary of their interests reflect what they are really aiming to achieve in the negotiation? Do you consider substantive, process and relationship interests where relevant?
Question 2: have you accurately used concepts from class? Are there any glaring omissions of class concepts that are notably more relevant than the ones you chose? Did you clearly identify specific concepts and where they applied within the article?
Question 3: did you thoughtfully combine class lessons in your overall assessment? Did you justify the actions you considered positive and negative by drawing from class lessons?
