Chapter Eleven Discussion Questions.
1) How can leaders manage the diverse workforce?
Managing diversity is a situation that is growing more and more every day, which is a great thing. We want to provide people with equal opportunities in as many ways as possible. Managers should focus on making the workplace as acceptable as possible for future employees. A job should not hire you because you do not meet their requirements as far as race, gender, or religion. As stated in the book, diversity does not always have to be about race. It can also be about gender, religion, political belief, and more. Diversity is something that should be included in the workplace, despite how you feel about the person. There is no reason at all to turn someone away from a school, job, or activity just because you do not want diversity.
2) How can leaders attract and train employees for the workplace?
Leaders/managers can attract new workers by recruiting, accommodating work and family needs, and alternative work arrangements.
Recruiting- Developing a reputation for being diverse when hiring new employees can be used as a recruiting tool.
Accommodating Work and Family Needs- Many employers offer on site child care to accommodate the parents need to care for their child.
Alternative Work Arrangements- Many jobs offer flexible work schedules or allow you to work after hours in order to make your time up for the work week.
Chapter Twelve Discussion Questions.
1) Discuss the sources of power.
· Legitimate Power- Has the right, or authority, to tell others what to do; employees are obligated to comply with legitimate orders.
· Reward Power- The leader who has reward power influences others because she controls valued rewards; people comply with the leader’s wishes to receive those rewards.
· Coercive Power- Has control over punishments; people comply to avid those punishments.
· Referent Power-Personal characteristics that appeal to others; people comply because of admiration, person liking, a desire for approval, or desire to be liked by the leader.
· Expert Power- Certain expertise or knowledge; people comply because they believe in, can learn from, or can otherwise gain from that expertise.
2) Explain leader behaviors and explain the different approaches.
There are three general categories of leadership behavior.
· Task Performance- Leader’s effort to ensure that teams, organizations, or individuals achieve their work goals.
· Group Maintenance- Leaders take action to ensure the satisfaction of group members, develop and maintain harmonious work relationships, and preserve the supportive leadership, or consideration.
