Module 3: Relationship Between Assessment, Data, and Instruction (Weeks 5–6)
How do you recognize a great relationship? One way is by the connection, association, or involvement that exists within it. All relationships include moments of assessing how to get issues resolved or tasks accomplished. Often in relationships, data derive from various forms of assessments. Assessments determine what the relationship needs or what it already has that is working. Data are not meant to cause friction or hostility, but are instead meant to inspire the relationship to shift, refocus, and grow for the sake of continuity and development. The data could be a result of effective assessments and evaluations derived from observations and conversations with those involved. Ultimately, data are used to present effective strategies in order to keep the relationship thriving. The same is true in the relationship between assessment, data, and instruction. The “right” data will allow one to identify effective strategies for teachers in order to provide quality instruction for their students. Like the three legs of a stool, valid forms of assessment, data collection, and good instruction are stronger together than they are individually.
As a district studies its data and makes recommendations, the CIA leader may be instrumental in bringing about change through various forms of assessment. Providing teachers new ways of implementing curriculum and instruction, and recognizing the fidelity of implementation, requires additional data collection. One method particularly well suited for this endeavor is instructional observation.
