Nursing professionals in all healthcare settings are impacted by informatics and the life cycle of an information system. Human-technology interfaces describe the application of human skills to hardware and software of information systems. These interfaces surround us in our practice settings. They can appear as bar-coded identification cards serving as an electronic time card, a bar code system for medication administration, or a defibrillator. These interfaces can be done by touch, voice, telecommunications such as telehealth, or keyboard. Educational interfaces can include virtual simulation for teaching skills to healthcare providers. Healthcare workers and patient outcomes are benefited when human-interfaces are compatible for maintaining safe, quality care.
Human-technology interfaces are not perfect as we know and one size does not fit all! A balance is required between the user and the technology (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2021, p. 145). Therefore workarounds are created which do not assist with long term problem-solving. The authors outline in this week’s readings 3 axioms for nursing professionals to utilize for improving these interfaces (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2021):
Axiom 1: Users must be an early and continuous focus during interface design
Axiom 2: The design process should be iterative, allowing for evaluation and correction of identified problems
Axiom 3: Formal evaluation should take place using rigorous experimental or qualitative methods
Increasing numbers of improvements are evolving for human interfaces in healthcare. Quality and safety can only be maintained by prudent healthcare professionals who design processes, not workarounds, to identified problems; tools designed to evaluate these systems are applied; and interfaces tested improve the workflow of the users.
