In his piece, “The Restoration of Faith,” author Amitava Kumar discusses an alternative response to crime. The goal of restorative justice is to pave the way to rehabilitation for the perpetrator through a better understanding of the harm caused by his or her actions and accepting responsibility for making reparations to those harmed. Choose any of the other cases discussed in the readings, and argue why restorative justice might or might not have worked in that case. Before choosing the offense, review the guidelines outlined in the Kumar essay (e.g., voluntary on the part of the victims, chance for rehabilitation of the perpetrator, etc.). Remember that restorative justice does not replace punishment.
