For this first writing assignment, you will be assigned a particular article or book chapter that will be made available in the modules section on CANVAS. Sometime after the due date, you will be able to see corrections and comments from the professor. The rubric below is a general guide to what should be submitted and how it will be evaluated. You are not asked to write the paper in APA format (NO abstract, NO materials & methods, NO results, those things make no sense for the assignment). Do you need a cover page … well, they look nice, but they are not required, so your choice. However, in-text citations (author, date) are required in APA format (7th edition) for each reference you discuss and for the original article/book chapter you were assigned. References in the “References” list must match the in-text citations inserted in the text and must also be in APA format (7th edition). There are examples of publications that use APA formatting for in-text citations and references available to you in the very first files in the modules. You have also had a separate graded assignment for writing references and in-text citations correctly in APA format that was due before this first writing assignment is due. All references must have published authors with real names and real publication dates. Encyclopedias (such as wikipedia) and “web blogs” of various types are NOT suitable as references for this assignment and must NOT be used as such. You should have at least six references in the “References” section (use APA format (Links to an external site.) for references) and you may have more. Do NOT write your paper in second person … if the word “you” or any of its variations (your, you’re, yours, etc.) appears in the paper (except as a direct quote from a cited author), you will be penalized 5 points after your paper is graded using the rubric. If you fail to include the original article in your reference list, you will be penalized 3 points after your paper is graded using the rubric. Longer written assignments that are submitted late will lose 10% of the possible score for each weekday that they are submitted late and will not be accepted after the “until date” on Canvas.
So, what exactly should you do? First, read the assigned article/book chapter on CANVAS (You will get an email telling you which article to summarize), maybe make notes about specific information the author mentions. You are expected to summarize this article in several (3 or more) pages, making sure to mention the obvious important bits of information that the author discusses. You must then find a minimum of five references that update or discuss/disagree with some topic(s) mentioned by the original author. (Do NOTuse google.com as your search engine, you will wind up with mostly unacceptable references and blogs. Use either the FGCU library databases or use scholar.google.com (Links to an external site.) for your search.) Do not use any of the original references that your author has used to write the article/chapter that you are assigned – these are NOT permitted. Your references should be newer than the original article in most instances, although exceptions are acceptable if your article is very new. In this part of your paper, it is often easiest to mention some topic that the original author mentions (e.g. Dr. Know commented that the moon is made out of green cheese in the original article. In response, Dr. NoNo in a newer scientific article disputes this, stating that there is now clear evidence that the moon cheese in question is in fact cheddar and here’s how we know that – and then give a few sentences to explain the new knowledge ….). Generally a paragraph about an original topic with later comments of dispute or agreement should follow. Remember to use in-text citations and references (use APA format only (Links to an external site.) for these).
(Note: It is important that you double space your writing assignments so I can make comments between the lines. Be sure your name is on both the paper and the electronic file. Be sure you give the paper a title – the title of the article you are discussing will do, but that is up to you.) After checking your assignment carefully for errors, please place your assignment in the online dropbox. Comments will be made directly on the paper as well as in the comment area on CANVAS alongside the paper, so please check both of these areas to further understand your score.
