Themes: Religion, Culture, Caste, Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, Women’s Experiences, Kinship, Griot, Political Strategy, Slave Trade Evasion, Kingdom, European Contact, Migration
Make sure to state the themes you have selected to compare in your chosen texts.
Questions to consider in essay:
What kind of sources have you selected, primary texts such as first-hand accounts; or secondary texts such as journal articles and biographies?
How does the text address your selected themes?
What kinds of examples do the texts illustrate about the themes? Is it effective (or not) at showing (explaining) this to the reader?
How does each text compare to the other in its depiction of the themes?
What are your final thoughts on the works? Imagine if the texts could speak to each other…would they agree with one another on how they address the themes?
Sample comparison:
If you chose the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and Caste for themes and you picked the Queen Njinga text and the Jan Vansina article on Mansa Musa you could compare how each text addresses the Queen and King’s use of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade for kingdom expansion and for caste (the person’s profession and status in society) how it impacted how vulnerable they were to being captured in the slave trade.
