HSF 1057 – Interpersonal
Behaviour and Human Services
Professional Stance Paper
Purpose
This paper requires you to
examine a societal / social justice issue that is relevant to human services practice.
First, introduce a case situation, a
population of interest, or a societal issue. Then describe the pertinent
aspects of this issue. Then, explore THREE perspectives from Chapters 3,
4, 8, and 9 that correspond to a professional response to the issue you
presented. Conclude the paper with a statement of your professional stance
toward the issue and what needs to be done from a societal and professional
perspective.
Task and Details
Write an analytical paper (approximately
6-7 pages, may go slightly over), content only, excluding title page and
reference page) as follows:
Introduction
paragraph. What is the purpose of this paper? What is the main
issue you are exploring? Can you get specific about it? What
are the pertinent aspects, main components? What is your thesis
statement? (about ½ page to 3/4 page)
Analyze
the key issues. Use EIGHT to TEN references (scholarly/academic) to make
sense of your issue. What do experts and authors have to say about
it? How will you organize your references to present an integrated
understanding of the issue? Make sure that each paragraph is not
just a summary of an article. EIGHT is the minimum number of references.
Using a few more gives you more credibility.
(Divide this into three subsections.
Takes about 3.5 pages, several paragraphs)
Paraphrase your articles for support. Do not use
quotations at all. Include in-text citations according to APA conestoga. Need
to know exactly where the source came from including page numbers.
Then,
identify THREE ethical, value based, moral, professional complications or considerations
as identified in Corey and Corey (Chapters 3,4,8,9). For each of the
three issues, you need to cite Corey and Corey using APA citation format
including the exact page numbers that refer to the concepts you are
discussing.
(Three paragraphs, one per issue, about 1.5 pages. Divide
into 3 subsections)
Now,
consolidate your analysis above into a statement that presents a
professional stance. Based on your research and analysis, what needs
to be done to address the issues. This should demonstrate your ability
attend to the issue in a way that represents the best of professional
practice as you have researched it. (3/4
page). Conclude your paper with a concluding statement summarizing
what you discussed in your paper. (3/4 – 1 page).

Marking Guidelines
25-30
– Full
adherence to APA@conestoga. Spelling, grammar, sentence structure are
extremely strong. The paper makes sense and relates well to an issue in
community service and human service work. There are citations throughout
the paper. Besides the text, the learner has used at least eight
scholarly/academic articles. The issues used from the text are clear. The
professional stance is clear, concise and relates well to the entire
paper. The paper is presented quite formally with clarity, assertiveness,
and balance.
20-24 –
The paper is
mostly in adherence to apa@conestoga. Spelling, grammar and sentence
structure are strong and the paper makes sense. There is a good connection to
an issue in community service. There could be one or two more citations
throughout the paper, but it is generally well cited. The issues from the text
are somewhat clear, but there could be a little more depth. The
professional stance is a little less formal, and has some merit, but needs more
clarity and relevance.
15-20 –
The paper lacks a
lot of adherence to apa@conestoga. There are many grammar and spelling
errors. The paper has some logical errors and the connections to the
issue are reasonable but not strong. The informality of the paper takes
away from the writer’s strength. The sources used are not scholarly and
academic. The issues and perspectives used from the text need more
depth. The professional stance is not well articulated and does not
reflect the text and the other readings as required by the assignment.
10-15 –
The paper is not
apa@conestoga compliant. The grammar and spelling errors are numerous and
the paper is hard to read. The content of the paper is not well linked to
an issue in society. The connections to the text are poor and the other
resources are not at all scholarly or academic. The professional stance
does not reflect the text and other readings.
