Read through the passage below and underline what you think is important: the main ideas and details
List the main points in an abstraction map
Summarize the authors’ important ideas in your own words
Use signal phrases at appropriate intervals in the summary, mentioning the author’s names.
A signal phrase indicates what the authors say from what you say.
Choose verbs that characterise the action of the original. For example, authors Sarah Nunes and Nancy Arthur observe, claim, argue, explain, describe, point out, etc.
Cite the source at the end of the summary (i.e. page number reference).
In a separate paragraph, respond to the summary by presenting what “you say” about the subject matter.
Passage:
The challenges that international students encounter while living and studying abroad are getting more and more attention in current research. The literature suggests that international students, in general, experience a series of stresses and challenges during their adaption to a new country as they encounter different learning and studying environments as well as different socio-cultural norms. In contrast to their previous support systems, language barriers make it difficult for students to quickly develop a reliable support system in a new environment. Moreover, due to their minority status, many international students even experience inequitable or marginalised treatment in schools and in groups in either implicit or explicit ways. However, some researchers are not content with these primarily pessimistic lenses to investigate the issues of international students’ adaption and acculturation. Some studies demonstrate that international students are actively obtaining knowledge through interactions with the reality of their overseas experiences. Many are continuously adjusting their learning styles, rebuilding self-confidence, negotiating identity, reshaping worldviews and their changing reactions to social norms and values.
