Indigenous Identities

This week, we flip that script, and we examine the ways that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders actively use media to express and produce identities. In the required readings we examine social media, which has emerged as a vital site of activism. I strongly encourage you to at least glance at the recommended readings, where we can see a truly intersectional approach that analyses Aboriginal LGBTQ+ communities on social media. The second recommended reading argues that Indigenous identity is a verb — something one does, rather than something one is. There are important resonances here with the idea of performativity, but the way that they are grounded in Country is importantly different than the way performativity is grounded in culture.
