Ethical egoism is not a legitimate ethical theory. It is a license for using the principle of ‘might is right’ and complete disregard for human beings. That is why ethical egoism has no place in the healthcare profession. Respond, comment on one of the following questions from the perspective of a healthcare professional.
1. Discuss Gyges’s Ring thought experiment as presented by Plato in the Dialogue The Republic. Would you become Gyges if you could get away without bad consequences?
2. In Examined Life, Nussbaum argues that we all need each other, we are interdependent; that human society is based on love rather than fear; that we need a good society in which we can flourish, i.e., cultivate our 10 capabilities. Do you agree/disagree? Explain. Use your experience.
3. In her interview with Mike Wallace, Ayn Rand declares that her philosophy of ‘objectivism’ challenges the moral code at the basis of western society, i.e., altruism as concern for the other, care of the other, helping the other in need means “moral cannibalism.” She calls the vulnerable and weak members of society: ‘leaches, looters, and moochers”. Do you agree/disagree? Explain. Use your own experience.
4. Religions around the world have advised that ultimate happiness and fulfillment requires the dissolution or transcendence of the ego (simply getting rid of one’s ego). Contemporary neuroscience has reached interesting conclusions about it. What is your position on this matter? Explain.
