My Colleague post:

One ethical decision my wife and I deal with, when visiting my family, is how to explain, or do we even explain, my brother’s drug and alcohol issues to my children. When they were younger, it was easier to ignore, and not have to speak to, but as they got older, they would ask questions about why he acted strange at times or slept so late. So the ethical dilemma is do we speak about these things to our children, and if so, how much do we share.
To some extent, it isn’t really their business, but they also don’t deserve to be lied too about why their uncle acts the way he does. Also, and this is also a potential ethical concern, he could act as a warning for them on the dangers of using drugs. For my older children, we decided to share some details with them, but are also worried it will change the way they see him. But in reality, it may help them to see him more clearly.
