POLS 3647 – MEDIA AND POLITICS
Fall 2021
Practical exercise (25 per cent)

A federal election
was held in Canada on September 20, 2021. The fight was
the campaign, but in
the aftermath of the election, everything seems to point to a
that the new composition
of the House of Commons will be very similar to
the old way. Since we
are in a minority government situation, a
new election could
happen at any time-so it’s not too late to
start preparing for
the next campaign!

The various parties

participation in the
POLS 3647 course. This is your chance to get known and to launch
your career in
political communication!

You already know who
you want to work for, but before you are given the task of
the party’s
communications for the upcoming campaign, the director
Communications of the
party of your choice would like to see what you are about
capable and what you
have to offer in the way of advertising to ensure that the
party attracts these
young voters. Please email him a memorandum
of a maximum of three
pages (approximately 750-900 words) (plus bibliography and
appendices, if any)
by 11:59 p.m. on October 22, 2021 so that he or she can take
its decision.

Instructions for the
memorandum

First of all, you are
free to propose an advertisement for the party of your choice (Party
Liberal Party of
Canada, Conservative Party of Canada, Bloc Québécois, New Party
Democratic Party,
Green Party, People’s Party of Canada)-it’s your choice.

In your memo of up to
three pages (750-900 words) (plus bibliography
and/or appendices)
due by 11:59 p.m. on October 12, 2021, you must submit a
proposal for an
advertisement in which you will describe or briefly explain what
your advertisement
would look like (about 250-300 words), then explain and justify your
(approximately
500-600 words) in order to persuade the Director of
Communications that
you are able to help the party achieve its goals.

You will need to :

– briefly present the
advertisement you propose to produce;
– explain the
objectives of the advertisement;
– justify the choices
made (theme[s] chosen, target audience[s], mode[s] of
dissemination[s],
positive or negative publicity) ;
– as an indication,
you can also include a budget (but this is not
required).

Basically, your memo
should attempt to answer the following questions and justify
your answers :

– What will your ad
look like?
– What is the theme
or themes of your ad?
– What are the
objectives?
– Who is the target
audience?
– How should this
advert be broadcast (TV? internet? networks?)
social media?
YouTube? a mixture of different means of distribution?)
– Is it positive or
negative publicity?
– What are (ideally
of course) the expected results?

Your memo should be
written in the correct language, in 12-point font
(Helvetica or Times
New Roman), saved in a pdf file and then
sent by email to
tcote76@yorku.ca before 11:59 pm on October 12, 2021.
