Assignment Use segmentation to break down the film, His Girl Friday (1940). Organize your segmentation around one of the following:
• time (diegetic time, that is time within the reality of the film narrative, e.g. morning, evening–three days later, afternoon–flashback, etc.)
• place (shifts in location/setting)
• action (might concern attitudes toward characters, e.g. awkward introductions, initial misunderstandings, reconciliation, dramatic break-up; might also concern action sequences, e.g. car chase, foot chase, bus chase, etc.; or could describe steps on a journey, e.g. interest in leaving, refusal to leave, forced to leave, gathering the crew, etc.)
Then explain what you learned about the theme of the film (what it’s really about) through the study of its structure. Many elements will overlap one another, but don’t worry about that. Choose how you want to arrange your segmentation, and stick with it. The more detailed you are in the outline, the better.
