Assignment Parameters:
Your assignment is to analyze the concept of globalization that we have focused on in class. You will apply the course concepts from the “Understanding the Larger Context of Globalization” Module/Unit (#2) in your analysis. This analysis assignment is divided into three major sections. This paper should be between 8-10 typed, double-spaced pages, and must be turned in on the assigned due date.
For your analysis, include the following sections (in this specific order):
A) Outlining Cultural Globalization
Based upon what you’ve learned in the “Understanding the Larger Context of Globalization” Module/Unit (#2), briefly summarize the concept of globalization. NO QUOTES ARE ALLOWED FOR THIS SECTION. Paraphrase the concept in your own words.
Differentiate between the contexts of economic, political, and cultural globalization. What do each of these cover? Why is cultural globalization especially important? Refer to the course material from Module/Unit #2 [Sorrells’ Chapter 2 in our textbook, Beynon & Dunkerly (PDF) reading, Barker (PDF) reading, Barker & Jane (PDF) reading].
Then, discuss the most significant effects and consequences of globalization in society. You must refer to at least 5 course concepts from the “Understanding the Larger Context of Globalization” Module/Unit (#2) [or from Sorrells’ Chapter 2 in our textbook, Beynon & Dunkerly (PDF) reading, Barker (PDF) reading, Barker & Jane (PDF) reading] and Module/Unit #3 [Sorrells’ Chapter 3 in our textbook, Bynoe (PDF) reading, Motley & Henderson (PDF) reading]. Be specific by providing examples and presenting arguments. Discuss your reasoning. Integrate course concepts (1-2 pages).
B) Critical Evaluation of Cultural Globalization:
In this section, present your opinion/evaluation of cultural globalization by answering the following question: To what extent is globalization a form of cultural imperialism that Westernizes/Americanizes the world or a limitless process of meaning and hybridity that enables multiple possibilities for change, resistance, and reconstituted cultural practices? Take a position and justify/argue it with specific examples, course concepts, and thoughtful reasoning. You must refer to at least 3 different course readings from the “Understanding the Larger Context of Globalization” Module/Unit (#2) [or from Sorrells’ Chapter 2 in our textbook, Beynon & Dunkerly (PDF) reading, Barker (PDF) reading, Barker & Jane (PDF) reading] and Module/Unit #3 [Sorrells’ Chapter 3 in our textbook, Bynoe (PDF) reading, Motley & Henderson (PDF) reading] in your response here. (If you choose to present an answer that integrates both positions of the question above, be prepared to strongly defend this position and strategically present the combination as an alternative position. I will heavily scrutinize such a response.) Present cogent arguments!!!!!!!! (2-3 pages)
C) The Future of Cultural Globalization
Lastly, to end the paper, present what you think is the future of cultural globalization. Chart out the future directions of cultural globalization. Use the following questions to guide you in constructing your response.
*What will happen in the future with regard to cultural globalization?
*Will cultural globalization continue its momentum or stop or temper out?
*What will the future effects of economic, political, and cultural globalization be (in terms of the spread of consumer capitalism, the increase in diasporic migration, the reconstruction of cultures, etc.)?
*To what extent will the notion of cultural authenticity die out?
*What role will the global media and popular culture have in the future?
*What will happen to cultural groups around the world and their identities?
*How will relations between cultural groups be characterized in the future?
*What will happen to the variety of cultural languages?
*How will power relations between groups be characterized?
Be specific by providing examples and presenting arguments. Refer to course material Discuss your reasoning. Integrate course concepts (2-3 pages)
