Assigned Readings:
Kennedy, David M. (2011). Don’t Shoot: One Man, A Street Fellowship, and The End of Violence in Inner-City America. NY: Bloomsbury Press (a lot of libraries have this, so you may not have to purchase; ECSU has it but not sure if you’re still on campus).
Part 1: (estimate about 1 page per question)
Kennedy discusses problems within community and goes on to identify 3 types of community (this refers not to geographic communities per se, but communities within them). Briefly discuss each of these communities.
What are the problems with each community?
According to Kennedy, how do these communities see each other?
Discuss what some of our conventional/”old school” approaches to policing were/are and why they are ineffective.
What does and will work, according to Kennedy?
Find two recent news articles relevant to Kennedy’s findings and apply his theories/concepts to those articles. Include links to the news articles to your final paper. Hint: In CT, Project Longevity (which has programs in New Haven and Hartford) is based on the principles of Operation Ceasefire.
