Follow the directions regarding the 3 questions, using the course materials (text, videos etc.)in responding. Your answers should be clear and concise, the paper no more than 3- 3 1/2 pages in length. Maintain the established format restating each component of the question and providing your response right after the restatement. Use citations to support your assertions (author and page number), pay attention to spelling and grammar.
1) Respond to the 3 of the Bullet Points in Question 1
Discuss the 4 purposes goals can have in the therapeutic process, and how each could be valuable in the counseling process
Discuss each of the components of the goal setting map: clearly defined goals, measurable sub goals (objectives toward achieving the goal), and interventions- techniques to be used to achieve the goal, the duration of these, and the frequency of these.
What are some of the obstacles encountered with clients in goal setting, and the potential effects of the process on the client both positive and negative
Discuss how people move from non-specific to intermediate to being specific in the goal setting process, and how we can assist them in moving through this process
Explain the difference between process and outcome goals, when would one be preferable over the other, and provide an example of each.
How do the following techniques assist in the goal setting process: visualizing activities, verbal confrontation, structuring skills, encouraging responses, role play and enactment
What might some of the cultural considerations be in the goal setting process?
2) Respond to either a or b in question 2
a) Discuss the considerations and adjustments that might be necessary in the goal setting process with children? What techniques might you employ, name at least 3?
b) Discuss the considerations and adjustments that might be necessary in the goal setting process with those in crisis? What are your priorities? What techniques might you employ?
3) Respond to all points in question 3
a) Take an everyday task such as doing laundry, preparing a meal etc. and then break it down into all the steps necessary to complete that task (This should be an incredibly detailed step by step narrative). Finish up by discussing the level of detail involved in completing the chosen task, and explain how you would go about teaching this process to someone who had never done this before? What educational tools might you use?
b) Using the goal setting map design your own goal sequence:
Step 1: Choose a main goal that is short-term- potentially achievable within 3 months such as finding employment, applying to college, deciding to move to another town, seeking assistance for an immediate, emotional issue etc. (It should be direct and concise-“I want” or “I will”) Use plain language, avoid jargon. It has to be understandable to the client.
Step 2: Write down the first 2 steps in the process toward achieving this main goal. These are your objectives toward achieving the goal or what the text calls sub-goals. Example: In an employment goal to begin the process: “I will decide on an area of interest in seeking employment” “I will research job opportunities in my area of interest that match my skills and education”
Step 3: For each of the 2 objectives/sub-goals you identified, write down two specific things you must do to achieve the objective/sub-goal. These are your immediate tasks or interventions. Employment Goal: “ I will start spending 1 hour each day 3x a week at the library exploring/researching potential areas of interest” “ With the assistance of my counselor I will weigh the pros and cons of my top 3 choices, and narrow it down to one”
c) Review the following (sub-goals and immediate tasks) and state whether they are measurable or not measurable, explaining your choice. Correct and rewrite the ones you feel are non-measurable
With the counselor’s help, Angela will identify what “family solutions” could be prescribed for her present circumstances.
James will be happier over the next 30 days
Donna will submit 3 job applications over the next 2 months
Ron will explore coping strategies
Susan will identify 3 triggers that increase her anxiety on a daily basis
