Literature for a New Nation: Washington Irving, Catherine Maria Sedgwick, and William Cullen Bryant

Think about the shift we are seeing toward more imaginative literature.

While you may certainly focus on the others in some detail, Irving’s work is a prime example to explore. Rip Van Winkle was a character who certainly made a “success of failure.” At the end of the tale, he was able to be honored and respected as the town storyteller, when just a few short years earlier this same “occupation” would have been frowned upon.
Is this reflective of storytelling in America?
