For this project, you are writing an analysis of your professional
discourse community. You have watched Gee talk about …… and you
have read Swales’ further thinking about discourse communities. Using
these ideas, you will describe and analyze how people use discourse in
your professional field (your major). In this description and analysis,
you will also consider the topics, controversies, or problems that are
central to your profession.
1. Describe your professional discourse community. Describe the
goals, roles, identity, and skills involved in this community. Include
how these goals, roles, identities, and skills are communicated.
2. Analyze how well these characteristics of the community are
communicated? How do you learn to belong to this community? What types
of discourse are most highly valued and what types are not valued?
3. What topics/controversies/problems are most important to people in this community? How are they discussed or addressed?
4. What are your personal plans about what you need to do to become a full member of your professional discourse community?
