Developmental Advocacy Research Paper

Developmental Advocacy Research Paper
This assignment supports your role as an advocate for your learners. The purpose of your paper is to advocate for developmentally-appropriate education which focuses on your chosen social-emotional issue and how the classroom can be designed to meet the needs of the whole child/adolescent.
You will first need to choose an issue. Issues may include food insecurity, grieving, a community garden, or any other topic that involves the social-emotional development of early childhood or middle childhood students. You should choose an issue that is important to you.
You will need to educate yourself about your issue. In order to do so, you will conduct scholarly research and write a report of approximately 3-5 pages. This report serves to document your learning about the issue and is designed to persuade an audience that they should adopt the improvement you suggest.
You will next need to choose an appropriate audience, such as your local school board, the state legislature, or the federal legislature. Your audience should have the power to implement the improvement.
Finally, you will need to persuade your audience to read your report. You will write a cover letter to position yourself as a credible advocate within the early childhood field and highlight key elements of your argument.
This assignment accounts for 30% of your grade. The full description of the assignment along with the rubric starts on p. 11 of this syllabus.
