Choose a historian and examine one of his major historical works. Although your essay is essentially an analysis of his work, you should include a short biography of the historian, place his work and his ideas within the context of his time, and place the book/work that you have analyzed within the context of the author’s works in general. Use the chosen work to study the historian’s methodology:
What sources did he use?
How did he organize his material?
What style does he use?
How honest is he?
How does the historian treat questions like causality and historical explanation?
What are the historical objects for him?
What are his models?
How does the context of the period or the aims of the historian influence his history?
Situate the author’s work within the framework of contemporary (to the historian being analyzed) historical writings and within that of historical writings in general. In other words, what is the historian’s contribution to the development of history? This contribution could be negative as well as positive.
