For this project, you will analyze the globalization of the cultural t-shirt in the bookstore for sale in Miami. That is any garment or shoe that you can readily purchase in town. Specifically, you will:
1) Trace the constituent products that go into the product you choose—where they come from, who produces them, how they get to south Florida, etc.
2) Analyze the functioning of the firm selling the product to consumers (the retailer)—how did this product impact those selling it, or did it not have an impact? Why?
3) Examine the policy implications of your chosen product. Examples of things to discuss here could possibly include: Is this product subject to regulation (controlled substance, organic production, fair trade certification, etc.)? Is it an imported product? If so, what types of tariffs were placed on its importation? Does this product have implications in the developing world?
By the end of the project, you should have illustrated the story of the product, how it came to be sold in Miami, and the larger political-economic processes that have occurred related to this item’s production and sale.
